In order to provide payers with a resource to help align their policies with evidence-based guidance, the AASM Payer Policy Review Committee (PPRC) recently finalized a Template Policy on Diagnostic Testing for Obstructive Sleep Apnea. This template policy gives payers an example that agrees with the recommendations in the AASM Clinical Practice Guideline for Diagnostic Testing for Adult Obstructive Sleep Apnea.
The PPRC continues to develop guideline scorecards to evaluate how effective payer policies are at establishing appropriate coverage for diagnostic sleep testing services, in order to encourage private payers to align with AASM recommendations. To date the PPRC has posted 12 scorecards on the Private Payers page of the AASM website.
To continue increasing communication with payers and encourage alignment with the clinical practice guideline, the committee will disseminate the template policy to payers whose policies have been scored, as well as those who may not have an existing policy. Members may send questions about the scorecards and/or the template policy to coding@aasm.org.
