Mentors

As a sleep professional mentor, you have a hand in framing the future of the field by helping another AASM member succeed early in his or her career. Engage in this volunteer opportunity with the AASM for your chance to facilitate professional connections, assist mentees in personal and professional growth, and offer resources for their development.

The opportunity to be a mentor is open to individuals who are active AASM members and have been in the field (out of training) for 5 or more years. Mentors and mentees are paired based on specialties, career goals and experience, and special interests. The professional mentorship program’s design offers flexibility for busy mentors and mentees, giving both control over the mentorship relationship and how the relationship will work.

Why should I become a mentor?

  • It’s rewarding: As a mentor, you can help someone who is new to sleep medicine, switching careers, or just looking for someone outside of their current environment to give advice and guidance. Mentoring helps you develop various leadership skills and advances your coaching, counseling, and listening skills. You may even create a long-lasting professional relationship with your mentee.
  • You can learn from your mentee: Mentorship provides a two-way learning opportunity. Pick up on skills you may need for your next steps while you provide direction to your mentee to do the same.
  • You expand your network: Being a mentor gives you the chance to meet new professionals in the field and stay engaged with the AASM and fellow members.
  • Pay it forward & support the field: You get to contribute to the development, retention, and guidance of talent in the field by sharing your experience and insight to help your mentee grow in the field of sleep medicine.
