The AASM International Classification of Sleep Disorders – Third Edition, Text Revision (ICSD-3-TR)

The International Classification of Sleep Disorders (ICSD) is the premiere clinical text for the diagnosis of sleep disorders. Due to the exponential growth in knowledge of sleep disorders, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine’s Board of Directors assembled a group of expert clinicians and researchers to revise the text of the third edition of the ICSD (published in 2014). Released in June 2023, this text revision was based on an extensive review of the current literature and features new and updated information in the text of each chapter, minor corrections, and some criteria changes (see Summary of Diagnostic Criteria Changes resource). Sleep disorders are grouped into six major categories in the ICSD-3-TR:

  • Insomnia Disorders
  • Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders
  • Central Disorders of Hypersomnolence
  • Circadian Rhythm Sleep-Wake Disorders
  • Parasomnias
  • Sleep-Related Movement Disorders

In addition, there is information about sleep-related medical and neurological disorders and ICD-10 and ICD-11 diagnosis codes in the appendices. ICSD-3-TR is an essential reference for all clinicians and researchers for accurately diagnosing sleep disorders.
