An updated meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials found that continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy has a favorable effect on insulin resistance in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients without diabetes, and this improvement appears to occur through mechanisms that are independent of changes in abdominal fat.

A separate meta-analysis also confirmed a significant association between OSA and insulin resistance, according to results published in the April issue of the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine.
