AASM staff participated in the 2024 CMS Quality Conference, #QualCon24, April 8-9. The conference’s theme was, “Resilient and Ready Together: Creating an Optimal Environment for Quality Healthcare for Individuals, Families, and Communities.”

This year CMS focused on several topics, which included:

  • Advancing Health Equity
  • Collecting and Using Quality Data
  • Engaging Partners and Communities
  • Expanding Access to Quality and Affordable Behavioral and Physical Healthcare
  • Healthcare System Resiliency and Readiness
  • High Reliability and Quality Improvement
  • New Technology and Innovation
  • Patient Safety

Two of the most compelling presentations during #QualCon24 were:

  • “The 2024 National Impact Assessment Report – Collecting and Using Quality data Across 26 CMS Programs” (Speakers: Kyle Campbell, PharmD; Kendra Hanley, MS, BA; Robert Ziemba, PhD)
    • Speakers presented quality measure results from 2016-2021 across 26 quality and value-based incentive payment programs using the following factors: COVID-19 public health emergency, national findings on health equity, and quality priorities. The key takeaway was the need for strategic action to return to pre-pandemic levels, while highlighting health equity gaps across health care quality priorities. The full report can be found here: 2024 National Impact Assessment of Quality Measures Report (cms.gov)
  • “AI in Quality Measurements – Opportunities and Challenges in Health AI for a Resilient Health System” (Speaker: Brian Anderson, MD).
    • In this session, the speaker discussed the core principles needed to responsibly implement artificial intelligence in the health care system and ensure that AI tools can be trusted and are safe.
