The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra signed a renewal of determination that extended the current COVID-19 public health emergency by 90 days, effective Jan. 16, 2022. The original determination made in January 2020 had been extended in April, July and October 2020 and again in January, April, July and October 2021.

The additional 90 days will come as a relief to many health care professionals and patients, as this extension will allow for continued implementation of policies outlined in existing waivers that have been implemented because of the pandemic, including waivers pertaining to telemedicine.
