From 2006 to 2014, the number of NIH-funded clinical trials decreased by 24 percent, while the number of industry-funded trials increased by 43 percent, based on data examined according to the first received date. Overall, the number of newly registered trials doubled to 18,400, according to a research letter published Dec. 15 in JAMA.

A random sample of 500 trials with funding from the “all others” category also found that 71 percent did not have funders based in the U.S.
