On Jan 19, 2016, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) published a blog post outlining plans for the future of the Electronic Health Record (EHR) Incentive program. The post reflects on national efforts to integrate technology, specifically EHR systems, into hospitals and doctors’ offices.
The existing EHR Incentive Program will be changing in the coming years to reflect new requirements under the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA). CMS describes four new principles under which the EHR incentive program will evolve in the coming years:
- Rewarding providers for patient outcomes achieved with the help of technology;
- Customized health IT options for providers’ individual practice needs;
- A leveling of the technology playing field to help promote innovation; and
- Prioritizing of interoperability and the flow of data based on needs of the patient.
