The AASM encourages members to visit the new Transportation Safety webpage on the AASM website! The webpage includes a number of documents addressing drowsy driving along with other transportation safety issues.

Seven percent of all crashes and 16.5 percent of fatal crashes involve a drowsy driver. To address this major public health issue, the AASM’s Sleep and Transportation Safety Awareness Task Force developed materials that include:

  • JCSM article on the Management of Obstructive Sleep Apnea in Commercial Motor Vehicle Operators
  • FAQs about management of OSA in commercial motor vehicle operators (CMVOs)
  • Drowsy Driving Position Statement
  • Drowsy Driving Template Language.

The webpage also includes the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s “Asleep At The Wheel: A National Compendium of Efforts to Eliminate Drowsy Driving,” along with the Governors Highway Safety Association’s “WAKE UP CALL! Understanding Drowsy Driving and What States Can Do.”

Please feel free to share this information with your colleagues, legislators, federal and state agencies, as well as other transportation stakeholders.
