Health care costs stem from price increases
Health care spending by privately insured individuals increased by 3.3 percent between 2009 and 2010. Spending has increased primarily because prices of services increased, according to a study by the Health Care Cost Institute. The findings are based on claims data from Aetna, Humana and UnitedHealthcare, which cover about 20 percent of residents with employer-sponsored health plans.

NIH announces Funding Opportunity for development of obesity interventions
The National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and several other components of the NIH have issued a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) for the development of obesity prevention programs. The FOA "Exploratory/Development Clinical Research Grants in Obesity (R21)" encourages grant applications from institutions that propose clinical studies that will accelerate the development of interventions for the prevention or treatment of overweight or obesity in adults and/or children. The open date for the funding opportunity is May 16.
House lawmakers to release details of new bipartisan proposal for “Doc Fix”
U.S. Representatives Joe Heck (R-Nev.) and Allyson Schwartz (D-Pa.) will release details of a new proposal that aims to repeal the sustainable growth rate formula that sets Medicare physician payment rates.
AASM to attend upcoming Sleep Disorders Research Advisory Board (SDRAB) meeting

CMS delays implementation of the Physician Payments Sunshine Act
In a blog post on May 3, The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced a delay to implementation of the Physician Payments Sunshine Act. Referred to as the Sunshine Act, the provision was developed to require physicians to disclose any financial compensation worth more than $10 from pharmaceutical or medical device companies.

Longer sleep times may counteract genetic factors related to weight gain
Sleeping more may help you fight a genetic predisposition to gain weight, according to a study in the May issue of SLEEP. Researchers at the University of Washington examined sleep and body mass index (BMI) in 1,088 pairs of twins. They found that sleeping more than nine hours a night may actually suppress genetic influences on body weight. Sleeping less than seven hours a night was associated with both increased BMI and greater genetic influences on BMI.
