The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services continues to emphasize changes to the durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics, and supplies (DMEPOS) accreditation process to strengthen oversight of DMEPOS suppliers and ensure ongoing compliance with Medicare supplier standards. These changes took effect Jan. 1, 2026.
Key changes include:
- Added language regarding how CMS is addressing DMEPOS fraud, waste, and abuse.
- Existing DMEPOS suppliers that change locations must be surveyed before being accredited.
- The survey frequency was updated from every three years to every 12 months.
- Information was added for suppliers undergoing a change in majority ownership.
Suppliers also should continue to monitor the impact of the temporary moratorium on new DMEPOS supplier enrollments that CMS previously announced for certain geographic areas and supplier categories. As announced by CMS in February 2026, the moratorium may limit some suppliers’ ability to obtain new Medicare billing privileges in affected locations.
DMEPOS suppliers considering expansion, ownership changes, or new enrollment applications should carefully review CMS requirements and work closely with their accrediting organization to avoid delays in accreditation, enrollment, and Medicare participation.
