Enrollment into ACA ends on March 31
The enrollment period allowing individuals to sign up for health insurance through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) ends on March 31. Under the ACA, individuals must be covered this year or face a penalty of $95 per person or 1 percent of the individuals income, whichever is higher.

Novitas requires facility accreditation in revised Medicare LCD for sleep studies
Novitas Solutions, Inc., a Part A and Part B Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC), has posted a revised local coverage determination policy (LCD) for outpatient sleep studies (L27530) in Jurisdiction L, which comprises Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, District of Columbia, and New Jersey. The revised criteria for coverage, which apply to outpatient sleep studies performed on or after March 27, 2014, require all non-hospital based facilities to be accredited.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) is declaring Insomnia Awareness Day on Monday, March 10, reminding those who suffer from chronic insomnia that help is available from the sleep team at a local AASM accredited sleep center. As many as 10 percent of adults have a chronic insomnia disorder, which involves ongoing difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, or regularly waking up earlier than desired, despite an adequate opportunity for sleep. Complications of persistent insomnia include increased risks for depression and hypertension. Effective treatment options include cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBTI), which can significantly improve overall well-being and quality of life.

Depression may reduce adherence during APAP titration trial
A study in the Feb. 15 issue of the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine found a significant independent association between depression and poor treatment adherence during an average of six nights of home-based autotitrating positive airway pressure (APAP) titration. According to the authors, depression may be a potential target for clinicians aiming to enhance adherence to APAP therapy among patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

NIH announces availability of new genetic data in online database
