Consumer sleep technologies – including mobile device apps and wearable devices - have the potential to both improve and impair collective and individual sleep health, according to a review published in the December issue of the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine.
NIH releases new strategic plan for 2016 – 2020
This week the National Institutes of Health (NIH) released the NIH-Wide Strategic Plan, Fiscal Years 2016–2020: Turning Discovery Into Health, which outlines how the agency will capitalize on new opportunities for scientific exploration and address new challenges for human health.
New report describes how telemedicine is being addressed by state legislatures nationwide
More than 200 telehealth-related bills were introduced in 42 state legislatures in 2015, according to a new report from the National Conference of State Legislatures.

CMS posts new data to Physician Compare
On Dec. 10 the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) posted 2014 quality data on the Physician Compare website. AASM members are encouraged to review this information to be aware of the quality data patients are now able to access.
Oklahoma Health Care Authority proposes to eliminate coverage for positive airway pressure therapy for adult Medicaid patients
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine is asking all Oklahoma members to submit comments to a recent proposal from the Oklahoma Health Care Authority (OHCA) that will severely limit Oklahomans from receiving therapeutic sleep care.

Study links childhood lead exposure to sleep problems
Elevated blood lead levels in early childhood are associated with increased risk for sleep problems and excessive daytime sleepiness in later childhood, according to a longitudinal study of Chinese children published in the December issue of the journal SLEEP.

HHS reports that U.S. health care spending increased 5.3 percent in 2014
According to new estimates from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), U.S. health care spending increased 5.3 percent in 2014, following growth of 2.9 percent in 2013, to reach $3.0 trillion, or $9,523 per person.

NTSB publishes special report describing findings in 2013 train derailment
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) recently published a special report describing its findings from the investigation of a deadly train derailment in the Bronx, New York, in 2013. Published in the November/December issue of the Annals of Family Medicine, the NTSB’s report, "Fatal Consequences: Obstructive Sleep Apnea in a Train Engineer," presents a familiar tale of driver/operator fatigue and the disastrous consequences of untreated obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
Hospital payment cuts averted for 2016
In mid-November the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) published the 2016 Hospital Outpatient Prospective Payment System (OPPS) Final Rule, which finalized recommended changes outlined in the proposed rule published this summer. However, proposals to drastically cut payment to in-center sleep testing were averted following comments submitted by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.
PQRS and value modifier informal review deadline is Dec. 16
Providers who did not satisfactorily report quality performance through the Physician Quality Reporting System (PQRS) in 2014 are scheduled to receive a negative payment adjustment (penalty) of 2% in 2016. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will accept informal review requests through the QualityNet Portal through Dec. 16, 2015.
