DARIEN, IL – The American Academy of Sleep Medicine has introduced the Full PSG Autoscoring Certification Program, a new initiative that independently evaluates and certifies autoscoring software that interprets adult sleep stages and events from polysomnography data.
The Full PSG Autoscoring Certification Program represents a significant expansion of the AASM’s earlier pilot initiative, which launched in 2023 and focused solely on sleep stage scoring using a limited dataset. In contrast, the new certification program evaluates all major components of polysomnography scoring, including respiratory events, arousals, and limb movements, using a robust, multi-site dataset of real-world patient records from accredited sleep laboratories.
By independently assessing real-world software performance against expert-scored sleep studies, the program helps accredited sleep centers identify autoscoring solutions that demonstrate accuracy comparable to manual scoring by trained professionals.
“As autoscoring tools become more integrated into clinical workflows, sleep professionals must be able to rely on objective, independent evaluation of their performance,” said Dr. Anita Shelgikar, president of the AASM. “The Full PSG Autoscoring Certification Program reflects the AASM’s commitment to advancing innovation while maintaining rigorous standards that support high-quality patient care.”
The program allows vendors to pursue certification for the full polysomnography scoring process or for individual scoring domains: sleep stage, respiratory, leg movement, or arousal scoring. This flexible approach enables companies to demonstrate performance in specific areas while supporting continued innovation across autoscoring technologies.
“Autoscoring solutions are playing an increasingly important role in modern sleep centers,” said Steve Van Hout, executive director of the AASM. “This certification program builds on the success of the pilot initiative and provides a more comprehensive, real-world assessment of autoscoring software, helping accredited centers make informed decisions as these technologies continue to evolve.”
The AASM is currently accepting applications for the Full PSG Autoscoring Certification Program. To be eligible, autoscoring software must have received 510(k) clearance from the Food and Drug Administration or be in the submission process, and it must be capable of analyzing raw, unscored, full-night polysomnography records. Companies that achieve certification will receive a certificate, be permitted to use the autoscoring certification mark for promotional purposes, and have their software recognized on the AASM website.
