Members of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) are encouraged to learn more about the Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) Death and Near Miss Registry, which was established through a collaboration between the Society of Anesthesia and Sleep Medicine (SASM) and the Anesthesia Closed Claims Project.
Submit comments on new circadian rhythm guideline by Tuesday, May 12
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine is inviting public comment on a draft clinical practice guideline for the treatment of intrinsic circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders. The public comment period will be open for 2 weeks beginning Tuesday, April 28, 2015, and ending Tuesday, May 12, 2015.

Study of narcolepsy patients finds that response to sodium oxybate may take months
A study of narcolepsy patients who were taking sodium oxybate for treatment of excessive daytime sleepiness and cataplexy found that a clinically meaningful therapeutic response was achieved in the majority of patients within one to two months.

Meta-analysis shows that CPAP improves insulin resistance in sleep apnea patients
An updated meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials found that continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy has a favorable effect on insulin resistance in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients without diabetes, and this improvement appears to occur through mechanisms that are independent of changes in abdominal fat.

Held April 8 – 10, 2015, in Rockville, Maryland, the AASM forum enabled 30 young investigators to network with AASM senior faculty and National Institutes of Health (NIH) staff while learning more about grant writing and participating in mock grant review sessions.

SGR repeal: What physicians need to know
Last week, after years of physician advocacy, a bill repealing the sustainable growth rate (SGR) formula was signed into law. Thanks to this new law, the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act, a 21% cut to physician payment will not be implemented. In addition, the legislation includes a number of new provisions that will help shape payment in years to come.
