On February 9, 2008, Dr. Samuel Fleishman presented the actigraphy application to the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) Editorial Panel requesting a code change for actigraphy. Currently, actigraphy is a Category III (0089T) code, a non-reimbursable temporary code that facilitates data collection and assessment of new services and procedures. The AASM requested the Panel change actigraphy to a Category I code, which is a reimbursable code.

The next step is for the application to be presented at the Relative Value Scale Update Committee (RUC) meeting in April 2008. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) has indicated to the RUC that we would like to develop primary information on physician work and practice expense for actigraphy.

To provide accurate and representative information, we need to survey the entire membership. It is critical for all members to participate with this survey so a strong case for the application can be presented to the RUC. More information on the survey will soon be posted on the Web site.
