Here are some tips and resources to help you if you are preparing for the sleep medicine maintenance of certification (MOC) exam, which is Monday, Nov. 20. The sleep medicine exam is being administered by the American Board of Internal Medicine and is being offered by other member boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), including the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN).

MOC Exam Basics

Blueprint

The detailed sleep medicine MOC exam blueprint includes content areas covered, their relative percentages and the approximate number of questions in each area to expect on a typical exam.

Question Format

The exam consists of single best answer questions only. This type of question consists of a brief statement, case history, graph or picture followed by a question and list of possible options. You must choose the one answer that is better than the others; note that other options may be partially correct. Answer every question because your score will be determined by the total number of questions answered correctly. There is no penalty for guessing.

Exam Day

Be sure to arrive 30 minutes prior to the appointment time specified on your confirmation e-mail. When you arrive at the test center, you will need to present primary (e.g., driver’s license, passport) and secondary identification (e.g., Social Security card, valid credit or ATM card). The sleep medicine MOC exam takes approximately 10 hours. The day is divided into several sessions, each containing up to 60 multiple-choice questions. You will have 100 minutes of available break time to use during your examination. The amount of break time you use after each test session will be subtracted from the amount of available break time. For instance, if you take a 10-minute break after session one, the amount of break time remaining for the exam will be reduced to 90 minutes. Learn more about What to Expect on Exam Day.
