The American Academy of Sleep Medicine regrets to announce that sleep medicine and sleep research pioneer Arthur J. Spielman, PhD, passed away on July 25, 2015.

He was co-director of the Center for Sleep Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College and a professor of psychology in the neuroscience doctoral subprogram at The City College of the City University of New York (CUNY).

A longtime AASM member and past member of the AASM board of directors, Dr. Spielman developed the influential 3P Model of Insomnia, describing its predisposing, precipitating and perpetuating factors.

He will be missed by his wife Marlene, sons Evan and David, and three grandchildren. Donations in his memory can be made to the Art Spielman Memorial Fund at the Weill Cornell Center for Sleep Medicine.
