The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) invites all eligible voting members to participate in the 2024 – 2025 leadership election and proposed bylaws update. Online voting will be open through Sunday, March 31.

Last fall AASM announced a call for nominations for vacancies on the Board of Directors and the Nominating Committee. We received a strong response from a host of highly qualified members who share a passion for the sleep field. The Nominating Committee thoroughly assessed the applicants, taking into consideration their history of AASM service, leadership experience, vision for the AASM, and unique expertise. Other factors that can enhance the diversity of the Board of Directors — including the applicants’ demographic, geographic and professional characteristics — were also considered.

The Nominating Committee recommended a slate of candidates, which was approved by the Board of Directors. As required by the AASM Bylaws, the nominees are now presented to the voting members for an election. Biographical information summarizing the qualifications and professional background of each candidate is available on the Leadership Election webpage.

The AASM Board of Directors periodically reviews governance documents as part of its general oversight of the organization.  During a recent review of the bylaws, the AASM Board of Directors identified and recommended several changes that better align with the overall strategic direction of the organization.  These changes were reviewed by legal counsel and are now being presented for adoption by the membership.

The proposed modifications to the bylaws seek to simplify and modernize the bylaws.  Proposed changes include replacing the Nominating Committee with a Leadership Development Committee, codifying the role and duties of the Immediate Past President, authorizing the Board of Directors to approve changes to the Bylaws as needed, updating the composition of the Committee on Committees to include the President, President-Elect, and Secretary/Treasurer. The breadth of the changes made a copy with tracked changes difficult to read; however, the links below will aid you in comparing the current bylaws to the proposed update:

An email with voting instructions was sent on March 11, 2024, to all eligible voting members (Full members in Regular, Fellow, and Fellow Emeritus standing). If you are an eligible voting member and did not receive an email ballot, please contact Christen Whittington at cwhittington@aasm.org.
