With Hurricane Irma expected to make landfall in Florida this weekend, the AASM urges all members in the storm’s path to take every safety precaution necessary. The National Hurricane Center warns that this is a life-threatening storm that will bring destructive winds, a dangerous storm surge, and heavy rain to southwest Florida, while heavy rain and flash flooding may follow in Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina.

After the recent destruction caused by Hurricane Harvey in Texas and Louisiana, and in anticipation of the damage that will be caused by Hurricane Irma, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) is announcing that disaster recovery assistance is available from the American Sleep Medicine Foundation (ASMF). AASM members and AASM-accredited member sleep facilities that need assistance in the aftermath of these storms should contact the ASMF at info@discoversleep.org.

The AASM also continues to encourage our members to support ongoing recovery efforts by giving generously to the relief agency of your choice. Reputable charitable organizations serving both affected regions include the American Red Cross and The Salvation Army. The Charity Navigator website has additional links to agencies responding to Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma.

The AASM appreciates your support.

Sincerely,

Ilene M. Rosen, MD, MS
