In response to the destruction caused by Hurricane Harvey, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) board of directors encourages all of our members to join us in making a donation to support disaster relief efforts in Texas and Louisiana.

This storm has been called “the most extreme rain event in U.S. history.” The record-setting rainfall has caused catastrophic and deadly flooding, displacing thousands of people from their homes and communities.

We are especially concerned for the safety of our colleagues, their families, and the patients they serve as the AASM has 163 members in Houston, where 30 AASM-accredited sleep facilities are located. Many more members reside in other cities and towns that have been battered by the storm in southeast Texas and southwest Louisiana.

Efforts to provide assistance to the people in this region are ongoing and will continue in the weeks ahead. The AASM urges all members to respond to this crisis by making a contribution to the relief agency of your choice. Links to some reputable charitable organizations are provided below for your convenience. A rapid and generous response by the sleep medicine community is needed today.

The AASM appreciates your support of the ongoing recovery and relief efforts in response to Hurricane Harvey.

Sincerely,

Ilene M. Rosen, MD, MS
