The White House is trying to quickly address a series of "pricing quirks" in the software that will be used for the roughly three dozen federal health insurance exchanges under the Affordable Care Act, according the Wall Street Journal. The online marketplaces are scheduled to open for enrollment on October 1.  

According to a report by the Commonwealth Fund, U.S. residents' access to affordable, quality health care varies widely from state to state.

A shortfall to the federal deficit is expected to increase over the long term largely because of increased spending on federal health care programs, according to a budget outlook by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO).

The Health and Human Services Department announced that 105 groups nationwide will receive federal grants totaling $67 million under the Affordable Care Act to serve as "navigators" for the insurance exchanges, the New York Times reports. 

Oregon's state-based health insurance exchange will launch on October1 as planned, but state residents will not initially be able to enroll in coverage on their own. Oregon is the first to announce a delay to its exchange, prompting concerns that other states might also be struggling to finish work on their exchanges before open enrollment begins.

Nearly half of all residents who currently purchase their own health insurance will be eligible for federal subsidies through the Affordable Care Act's health insurance exchanges in 2014, reports a recent Kaiser Family Foundation study.
