This week the AASM sent a letter to California Governor Jerry Brown, expressing continued support for California Senate Bill 328, “Pupil attendance: school start time.” The bill, which has passed in the state Senate and has been referred to the Assembly Appropriations Committee, would require the school day for the state’s middle schools and high schools to begin no earlier than 8:30 a.m. by July 1, 2020.

In April, the AASM published a position statement indicating that middle school and high school start times should be 8:30 a.m. or later to support adolescent health, performance and safety.
