The American Academy of Sleep Medicine congratulates Kannan Ramar, MD, who was named the 2026 recipient of the Editorial Excellence Award, which recognizes the outstanding work of an associate editor of the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine.
“Receiving the Editorial Excellence Award is both humbling and meaningful,” said Dr. Ramar. “I am grateful for the leadership of the JCSM and the AASM, and for the vision and guidance of our editor-in-chief, Dr. Safwan Badr, our Deputy Editors, and our reviewers. Editorial service has been a deeply rewarding opportunity to uphold scientific rigor, support the next generation of investigators, and advance the field of sleep medicine.”
Dr. Ramar was selected by JCSM editor-in-chief Dr. Safwan Badr and will be recognized during the upcoming annual meeting of the JCSM editorial board, which will be held Tuesday, June 16, during SLEEP 2026 in Baltimore.
Dr. Ramar is a professor of medicine and a sleep medicine physician at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and currently serves as the medical director of the Center for Sleep Medicine. He is a Fellow and past president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and has been a member for the last 20 years. He has been actively engaged in advancing clinical care, education, and scholarship in sleep medicine. His clinical and research interests include sleep-disordered breathing, health services and outcomes research, and improving access, quality, and patient safety in sleep and healthcare.
The Editorial Excellence Award is bestowed in honor of JCSM founding editor Dr. Stuart Quan, who served as editor-in-chief from 2005 – 2014. Previous recipients are listed on the AASM awards page.
The primary responsibility of associate editors is to make editorial decisions on manuscripts assigned to them by the editor. This work includes managing reviews by members of the editorial board and external reviewers, making initial publication decisions, and submitting recommendations for editorials.
The AASM is seeking manuscript reviewers for the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine. More information is available on the volunteer opportunities page.
