Version 5010 – The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has announced that on June 30, 2012 it will begin enforcement of the required transition to Version 5010 for all HIPAA covered transactions.  Although the transition to Version 5010 was required by Jan 1, 2012, CMS has twice delayed the enforcement of this requirement.  Beginning Jun 30, claims submitted that are not Version 5010 compliant will be rejected.  Providers who have not yet made the transition should review the CMS Version 5010 fact sheet.  Additional information can also be reviewed on the CMS website

eRx Hardship Exemptions –The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has announced that on June 30, 2012 it will begin enforcement of the required transition to Version 5010 for all HIPAA covered transactions. Hardship exemption requests are accepted for the following circumstances:

  • Inability to electronically prescribe due to state, federal or local law or regulation;
  • Eligible professional prescribes fewer than 100 prescriptions during a 6-month payment adjustment reporting period;
  • Eligible professional practices in a rural area without sufficient high-speed internet access; and
  • Eligible professional practices in an area without sufficient available pharmacies for electronic prescribing.
