Humana has published an updated coverage determination for adult sleep studies.  The new policy details the payer’s stance on coverage of PAP NAPs – the daytime, abbreviated cardio-respiratory sleep studies to acclimated patients to positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy. Humana states in its policy that PAP NAP services “are considered integral to the primary procedure and (are) not separately reimbursable.”  A complete copy of the Humana policy, called “Sleep Studies, Adult” is available on the Humana Medical and Pharmacy Coverage Policies website.

To-date, the AASM has not identified any other payer policies that specifically mention coverage of PAP NAP.  Members interested in providing the PAP NAP service to their patients should contact payers in advance to determine whether or not it is a covered service.
