The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has announced a 12-month "contingency plan" for compliance with the National Provider Identifier (NPI) deadline of March 23, 2007.

The plan allows physicians and others to continue using their new identifiers (e.g., UPIN and other numbers assigned by commercial health plans) on claims and other electronic transactions. The NPI will become the single, unique identifier for physicians when doing electronic business with all payers, including Medicare.
