New recommendations recognize obstructive sleep apnea and chronic sleep deprivation as emerging risk factors for Type 2 diabetes. The Guiding Principles for the Care of People With or at Risk for Diabetes recommend that screening should be considered in adults of any age who are overweight or obese and have one or more additional risk factors such as OSA. The Guiding Principles document also advises physicians to ask diabetic patients about symptoms of sleep apnea and refer those with symptoms for testing. The recommendations were developed by the National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP), which is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
