A study in the Dec. 15 issue of the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine examined changes in salivary biomarkers of physical fatigue during a period of sleep deprivation. Results suggest that the fatigue biomarker index (FBI) holds promise as an objective measure of sleep deprivation. According to the authors, salivary biomarkers of physical fatigue could provide a fast, convenient, and relatively inexpensive tool for use in the diagnosis and monitoring of sleep disorders.
