A new report submitted to President Obama from the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology recognizes that telemedicine will play an important role in supporting healthy aging for all Americans. The report, “Independence, Technology, and Connection in Older Age,” which was prepared by an advisory group of the nation’s leading scientists and engineers, recommends improving regulation and payment to reflect innovation in telemedicine.

Specifically, the report recommends that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) convene the Federation of State Medical Boards and the National Governors Association to accelerate reciprocal state licensure policies. It also recommends that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) advance payment policies that support telemedicine innovation..
