Board Review Trouble Spots is a series of four webinars that address "trouble spots" from the first examination. Among all candidates, the poorest scores were seen in the areas of pharmacology, considerations and disorders unique to childhood and organ system physiology. The AASM has assembled a panel of experts in these areas to help you begin to fill in gaps in your knowledge.
The last webinar in the series is Physiology of Sleep with Susheel Patil, MD, on Wednesday, February 18, 2009, at 12:00 p.m. CST. Dr. Patil will review key components of cardiovascular and respiratory physiology that are modulated by sleep. The webinar will begin with a review of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and its control of cardiopulmonary systems. Cardiovascular reflexes mediated by the ANS including the baroreflexes, chemoreflexes, and cardiopulmonary reflexes will be discussed. Alterations in ANS activity with sleep state and sleep disorders will be reviewed along with subsequent effects on cardiovascular hemodynamics. General respiratory physiology with respect to control of breathing will be highlighted. In particular, the effects of chemical, mechanical, behavioral stimuli, and sleep state on respiration during sleep will be highlighted.
