Elizabeth G. Nabel, MD, will step down as director of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) to become president of Brigham and Women’s/Faulkner Hospitals in Boston. She will assume her position Jan. 1, 2010, succeeding Gary Gottlieb, MD, MBA, who becomes CEO and president of Partners HealthCare when James Mongan, MD, retires at the beginning of the new year.

Nabel, a board-certified cardiologist, completed her internship and residency in internal medicine and a clinical and research fellowship in cardiovascular medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard University. She joined the NHLBI as scientific director for clinical research in 1999 and became director in 2005, overseeing an annual budget of approximately $3 billion. Nabel also serves on the editorial boards of the New England Journal of Medicine and Science Translational Medicine.
