IOM workshop discusses partnering with patients for better health

On Aug. 15 the Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academies posted the proceedings from a February 2013 workshop, “Partnering with Patients to Drive Shared Decisions, Better Value, and Care Improvement.” The workshop, which was convened by the IOM’s Roundtable on Value & Science-Driven Health Care and sponsored by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and the Blue Shield of California Foundation, gathered patients and experts in areas such as science, communication, and health economics. Attendees discussed how patients and families can be empowered to become active partners in their health care.

The complete conference proceedings are available online along with a four-page meeting summary that addresses the core areas of informed, shared care decisions; knowledge generation; and value. The IOM is an independent, nonprofit organization that works outside of government to provide unbiased and authoritative advice to decision makers and the public.
