In a recent blog post for the science section of The Huffington Post, actor and science advocate Alan Alda describes how 11-year-new students are challenging scientists to explain, “What is sleep?” The 2015 Flame Challenge, which is run by the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University, presents scientists with a challenge “not to show how much they know but to communicate what they know.” One written entry and one video or graphic entry will receive a $1,000 cash prize, and the winners will get a trip to New York City, where they will meet Alan Alda and be honored at a special event at the World Science Festival in May 2015. The submission deadline is Feb. 13, 2015.
