Sleep scientists have until Feb. 13, 2015, to enter the 2015 Flame Challenge by answering the question, “What is sleep?” The contest, which is organized by the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University, challenges scientists to explain sleep in a way that will enlighten 11-year-new students. One written entry and one video or graphic entry will receive a $1,000 cash prize, and the winners will get a trip to New York City, where they will meet Alan Alda and be honored at a special event at the World Science Festival in May 2015. Entrants can visit the Flame Challenge website to see winning entries from previous contests and review resources such as FAQs for scientists and advice from previous student judges.
