Last week in The Washington Post, an editorial by National Institutes of Health Director Francis S. Collins, MD, PhD, argued that biomedical research is an investment in the nation’s health. However, he warned that spending cuts and lagging budgets are preventing NIH from turning scientific discoveries into better health. Sustained investment is required to support high-priority efforts, including the Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) Initiative and the continued manipulation and analysis of “big data” sets.
