Following its third stakeholder meeting on April 17, the Colorado Dental Board’s Sleep Apnea Committee released a revised draft of proposed rules on the dentist’s role in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The Colorado Dental Board will consider the draft and discuss next steps at its meeting on Thursday, May 4, and the Colorado Medical Board also will consider the same draft at its meeting on Thursday, May 18.

The AASM continues to contend that language in the proposed rules would violate the state’s dental and medical practice acts, which establish well-defined boundaries for the dentist’s involvement in treating sleep-disordered breathing. The AASM will continue to update our members in Colorado with additional information on the draft rules, logistics of the Dental and Medical Board meetings, and a template letter to submit comments.
