The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) on October 26 posted a new transmittal, "How to Handle the National Provider Identifier (NPI) for Ordering/Referring and Attending/Operating/Other/Service Facility for Medicare Claims," online at www.cms.hhs.gov/transmittals/downloads/R225PI.pdf.
The transmittal states that in accordance with the NPI final rule, when an identifier is reported on a claim for ordering/referring provider, that identifier must be a NPI.
