By Sunday, Jan. 1, 2012, all HIPAA-covered entities are required to be compliant with Version 5010, the new version of the X12 standards for Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) transactions.  The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) previously recommended that providers begin internal testing (Level I) on Jan. 1, 2010, and external testing (Level II) on Jan. 1, 2011.

Now CMS has designated the week of Aug. 22-26, 2011, as National Version 5010 Testing Week to assist in the transition and to encourage providers to perform external testing (Level II) with their Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs).  CMS has developed a variety of educational fact sheets and resources to assist providers in their transition to 5010.  The educational website GetReady5010.org also has a number of helpful resources, including the free webinar, “HIPAA 5010 Testing for Small Practices.”

Don’t delay – start testing Version 5010 in your practice today!
