International Classification of Sleep Disorders (ICSD)

The International Classification of Sleep Disorders (ICSD) is the premiere clinical text for the diagnosis of sleep disorders. Published by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) in 2023, the International Classification of Sleep Disorders – Third Edition, Text Revision (ICSD-3-TR) was based on an extensive review of the literature. It features new and updated information in the text of each chapter, minor corrections, and some criteria changes. (See below for a summary of diagnostic criteria changes.)

Sleep disorders are grouped into six major categories in the ICSD-3-TR:

  • Insomnia Disorders
  • Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders
  • Central Disorders of Hypersomnolence
  • Circadian Rhythm Sleep-Wake Disorders
  • Parasomnias
  • Sleep-Related Movement Disorders

In addition, the appendices have information about sleep-related medical and neurological disorders and ICD-10 and ICD-11 diagnosis codes. ICSD-3-TR is an essential reference for all sleep clinicians and researchers.
