In the coming days, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine will launch an AMA/Specialty Society Relative Value Scale Update Committee (RUC) survey of the CPT codes for home sleep apnea testing (95800, 95801, 95806). In order to help the RUC accurately describe the physician resources required for HSAT, we need sleep physicians to complete the survey.

In less than three weeks, hundreds of sleep medicine clinicians from across the country will gather at Sleep Medicine Trends 2017 to discuss the latest advances in our field and consider future opportunities for growth. There is still time for you to register and join us for this premier event, which will be held at the Pointe Hilton Squaw Peak Resort in Phoenix, Arizona.

Recent developments have brought renewed attention to the relationship between sleep and heart health. The AASM and several of our members have taken action to ensure that the full message is being told.

I have been a member of the AASM since I first entered the field as a sleep fellow who was embarking on a new professional journey. Over the years, I have grown to appreciate the many ways in which the AASM has had a positive impact on my career.

Earlier this summer, I invited all AASM members to complete an anonymous, online survey about both current initiatives and potential future directions for the AASM. I am grateful to all of you who took the time to provide your feedback and thoughtful input, which the Board of Directors reviewed as we began a strategic planning process in July.

You may have seen the recent announcement: After 38 years of jointly publishing the journal SLEEP with the Sleep Research Society, the AASM Board of Directors voted to sell the AASM’s interest in SLEEP to the SRS. This note is to explain the rest of the story.

In July the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) Board of Directors will begin an important strategic planning process to develop a 3-year road map for the organization. The AASM has appointed an Insurance Policy Review Committee to implement a more systematic approach to tracking insurer policies and challenging their shortcomings.

The AASM encourages each of the sleep medicine fellowship training programs to participate in the annual Specialties Matching Service Fellowship Match, which is organized by the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), and the AASM recently launched the Choose Sleep website to help educate residents and medical students about the rewarding potential of a career in sleep medicine.
