Study links sleep apnea with cardiac dysfunction

A study using echocardiography found that patients with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea tend to have cardiac dysfunction. Results of the study from Taiwan show that participants with OSA have a higher incidence of cardiovascular remodeling and ventricular diastolic dysfunction, even in patients without congestive heart failure.

Study in NEJM examines upper-airway stimulation for OSA

A study published Jan. 9 in The New England Journal of Medicine reports that a surgically implanted upper-airway stimulation device led to significant improvements in objective and subjective measurements of the severity of obstructive sleep apnea.

Study examines reasons for CPAP adherence among teens

Health education, peer support groups, and developmentally appropriate individualized support strategies may be important in promoting CPAP therapy adherence among adolescents with obstructive sleep apnea, according to a qualitative study published in the Dec. 15 issue of the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine.
