FAA to require sleep apnea testing for obese pilots
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced a new policy that will require obese pilots to be evaluated by a board certified sleep specialist. Under the new rule, aviation medical examiners will calculate the BMI of all pilots and air traffic control specialists.

Study examines frequency and type of adverse events during in-lab polysomnography
A Mayo Clinic study found that adverse events during polysomnography were relatively uncommon, with an event occurring on average once for every 623 PSGs. The most common adverse events were cardiac in nature (29.3%), with a majority involving acute chest pain.

CMS announces January implementation of ordering/referring provider edits
In March, the AASM reported that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) planned to implement edits resulting in claims denial if the ordering or referring provider is not enrolled in Medicare.
Apply to participate in the 2014 Young Investigator Research Forum
The application process for the 2012 AASM Young Investigator Research Forum must be completed by Friday, Dec. 2, 2011. The forum will provide young investigators the opportunity for collegial interaction with established senior faculty members across the broad spectrum of clinical sleep research, as well as NIH scientific and program officers.
