New AAA traffic safety report highlights deadly impact of drowsy driving
A new report issued Nov. 3 by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety suggests that drowsy driving causes an average of 6,400 fatal crashes on U.S. roads each year. The National Healthy Sleep Awareness Project urges drivers to keep our roads safe by staying “Awake at the Wheel.”

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force invites physicians and researchers to submit public comments on a draft research plan to form the basis for a systematic literature evaluation on Obesity and Interventions for Weight Management in Children and Adolescents. The draft research plan is available for review and public comment until Nov. 19, 2014.
Study funded by ASMF discovers a novel role for REM sleep
A study in the Oct. 29 issue of the Journal of Neuroscience demonstrates a novel role for rapid eye movement (REM) sleep in human memory formation and highlights a significant cognitive consequence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
Study of veterans examines race and CPAP adherence
A study in the October issue of the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine found that race-ethnicity may moderate the relationship between continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) adherence and some functional outcomes of sleep. The study involved 227 veterans with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). According to the authors, longitudinal studies of diverse patients with OSA are needed to replicate these findings.
NTSB confirms role of sleep apnea in deadly train accident
Earlier this week the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) confirmed that the probable cause of the December 2013 derailment of a Metro-North train in Bronx, New York, “was the engineer’s noncompliance with the 30-mph speed restriction because he had fallen asleep due to undiagnosed severe obstructive sleep apnea exacerbated by a recent circadian rhythm shift required by his work schedule.”

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) has joined other members of the Ad Hoc Group for Medical Research in signing a letter that urges Congress to restore funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to pre-sequestration levels.

2014 PQRSwizard – Earn incentives and avoid penalties
Registration is now open for the 2014 PQRSwizard quality measure reporting program. PQRSwizard is a CMS-approved registry which allows providers to successfully participate in Medicare’s Physician Quality Reporting Program (PQRS).
