Donald M. Berwick, MD, is resigning as Administrator for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), effective December 2, the Washington Post reports. The Obama administration has nominated Marilyn Tavenner, CMS’ principal deputy administrator, to replace him.

Dr. Berwick has occupied the post since July 2010 as a “recess appointment” by President Obama. As a recess appointee, Dr. Berwick had all the powers of a permanent appointee but could serve only until the end of 2011.

Ms. Tavenner previously served as the secretary of Virginia’s Health and Human Resources agency. She also was president of the Virginia Hospital Association and a board member of the American Hospital Association.
