As reported recently in American Medical News, the largest medical school expansion since the 1970s is taking place. With the success of efforts to increase the number of medical school programs and students, the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) is now focusing attention on the need to expand fellowship training programs, according to an October 28, 2007, article in the Houston Chronicle.

With the successful establishment of sleep medicine fellowship programs accredited by the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) has broadened its vision of residency education and training with the creation of the AASM Comprehensive Academic Sleep Programs of Distinction.

This initiative recognizes academic sleep programs that have demonstrated excellence though compliance with rigorous standards in the areas of clinical service, educational mission and research accomplishments.
