M. Safwan Badr, MD, is a past president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) and is board-certified in sleep medicine, pulmonary medicine, critical care medicine and internal medicine.
Dr. Badr serves as professor and chief of the division of pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit. He is a staff physician at the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center and the Detroit Medical Center. Dr. Badr directs the sleep fellowship program at Wayne State University School of Medicine, where he has served in multiple positions, including professor of medicine, since 1996. His research program focuses on the pathophysiology and epidemiology of sleep apnea.
Dr. Badr earned his medical degree from Damascus University Medical School. Upon completion of his internal medicine internship and residency at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Dr. Badr completed two fellowships at the University of Wisconsin, where he was appointed to the medical faculty in 1990. Dr. Badr has been a member of the AASM since 1989 and has served on the board of directors since 2008.
