In the January issue of SLEEP an editorial by AASM President-Elect Nathaniel Watson, MD, describes an upcoming conference that will be convened by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Sleep Research Society to achieve consensus on the definition of sufficient sleep for a healthy adult. The need for the consensus conference was identified through the National Healthy Sleep Awareness Project, a collaborative initiative that is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It is anticipated that the consensus recommendation will help the sleep medicine community address one of the most common questions about sleep that is asked by patients, reporters and the general public.
