The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Center for Workforce Studies has released new physician shortage estimates, projecting that in 2015 there will be a deficit of 62,900 physicians.

By 2025 that shortage is expected to have doubled, with a projected deficit of more than 130,000 physicians across all specialties.

The AAMC is calling on Congress to lift the freeze on Medicare-supported residency positions so that the number of residency training positions can expand at the nation’s teaching hospitals.
