DARIEN, IL – Today, Jennifer L. Martin became the president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine board of directors during the membership meeting at SLEEP 2022, the 36th annual meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies, in Charlotte, North Carolina. The AASM is the leading professional society in the medical subspecialty of sleep medicine.
During her one-year term, Martin will lead an organization that has a joint membership of 11,000 accredited sleep centers and individuals, including physicians, scientists and other health care professionals. She will help AASM achieve strategic goals related to public awareness, technology innovation, workforce development, and advocacy to improve patient care.
“I am honored to be appointed president of the AASM,” said Martin, who is a licensed clinical psychologist. “I have been devoted to this association for nearly two decades, and I look forward to working with our members to achieve our mission of advancing sleep care and enhancing sleep health to improve lives.”
Under Martin’s leadership, the AASM will continue to raise awareness that sleep is essential to health and will supply resources and education for health care professionals, patients and the public. One of her priorities as president will be for the AASM to collaborate with other stakeholders to identify and prioritize strategies to increase access to high-quality care for insomnia disorder.
“Insufficient sleep and untreated sleep disorders have a detrimental impact on physical health, mental health, mood and well-being,” said Martin. “It is essential for us to sleep well so that we can be healthy, feel good, and enjoy life.”
Martin is a professor of medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles. She is also associate director for clinical and health services research in the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System’s Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center.
Martin received her doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of California, San Diego. She completed her clinical internship at Brown University and her post-doctoral fellowship in geriatrics at UCLA. She is board-certified in behavioral sleep medicine by the American Board of Sleep Medicine.
